Don’t skip this step as you risk burns as you try to find the source of the leak. Note that it may take hours for the exhaust to cool down.
After cooling, use a trolley jack to allow some clearance underneath the car where you can work.
Make sure that you attach the trolley jack to the appropriate points beneath the car before raising it.
In addition, you should use a jack stand to support your car further. That way, you ensure maximum safety when working underneath the vehicle.
The next step is inspecting the exhaust piping to spot any signs of damage. First, inspect the front part of your car and then move to the back part.
Look for any signs of punctures, cracks, holes, and rust.
Once you’ve found the culprit, start the car to confirm it. Just make sure you don’t touch any part of the exhaust system when the car is on.

Now use a sealant such as J-B Weld 8281 Professional Size Steel to create the seal for the patch. Don’t apply too much to avoid it leaking inside the exhaust pipe.
Next, place the aluminum cutout over the area where it’s leaking and secure it properly. You can add another layer of epoxy over the aluminum sheet cutout to strengthen the seal.

You can replace your old muffler with a quiet performance muffler. This means you will have to purchase a different muffler, and you’re going to spend more cash than when fixing the leak.

Some bandages and exhaust paste
You can fix cracked or pierced exhaust pipes using an exhaust paste-like Holts Exhaust Paste 200G.
It’s a heat-resistant compound that will temporarily fix the leak- it works like glue.
Once you’ve applied the exhaust paste, wrap some bandages around the pipe to prevent the paste from leaking to the ground as it dries up.
